It is a clear fact that you need a good number of hours of sleep for optimal sleep - but often you don't get these hours due to your daily activities - remember that optimal and complete sleep is essential for overall health and well-being. The duration and quality of sleep are crucial factors for proper body function. Sleep needs vary depending on age, lifestyle, time of year, and health conditions. Let's see how many hours of sleep the National Sleep Foundation recommends for people of what age.

Recommended sleep duration.

Baby up to 3 months.

Experts used to prescribe 12 to 12 hours of sleep as mandatory for a newborn i.e. up to 3 months of age, but now there has been a change and experts recommend 14 to 17 hours of sleep for a child of this age.

4 to 11-month-old baby.

The recommended duration for a child of this age is 12-15 hours, but the scale has a wide range and can vary between 10 and 18 hours.

The recommended sleep duration for children of this age is 11-14 hours, but the range is also wide so sleep duration can be from 9 to 16 hours.

3 to 5-year-old children.

According to experts, the sleep of children of this age should be between 10 and 13 hours, but there can be changes due to which this sleep can be 8 to 14 hours.

6 to 13 years.

School-age children should have 9 to 11 hours of sleep, which can vary from 7 to 12 hours.

Youth from 14 to 17 years.

The recommended sleep duration for young people of this age is 8 to 10 hours, which can be as high as 7 to 11 hours.

Young people from 18 to 25 years.

This is the age of full youth and experts recommend 7 to 9 hours of sleep for people of this age with a maximum duration of 6 to 11 hours.

Adults aged 26 to 64 years.

For people of this age, according to experts, it is best to sleep for 7 to 9 hours, but this sleep can also be for 6 to 10 hours.

Elderly persons above 65 years of age.

Experts recommend 7 to 8 hours of sleep for adults of this age, which can range from 5 to 9 hours.

Conclusion:

Kids need to get enough sleep, as it is linked with better health, including improved attention, behavior, learning, memory, emotional regulation, quality of life, and overall mental and physical health.

For adults, consistently getting less than seven hours of sleep per night has been linked to poor health outcomes such as weight gain, high BMI, diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, and depression.

If you are worried about your or your child's sleep habits, it's best to discuss it with a doctor.
